Installing the desktop tracker
Once you've signed up for your account on the web, install the tracker on the computer you use for work.
Download the installer
- Sign in to the ScreenJournal web app.
- Open the Downloads page.
- Pick your OS:
- macOS — downloads a
.dmgfile. - Windows — downloads an
.exeor.msiinstaller.
- macOS — downloads a
Use the same machine you actually work on. Installing on a different computer is fine; you can sign in on more than one device, and each session shows up as its own segment in the dashboard.
macOS install
- Double-click the downloaded
.dmgto mount it. - Drag the ScreenJournal app from the disk image into your Applications folder.
- Open Applications → ScreenJournal.
- macOS will warn that the app was downloaded from the internet the first time you open it. Confirm by clicking Open.
On first launch the app will request OS permissions:
- Screen Recording — required. macOS opens System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording. Add ScreenJournal to the list and turn it on. macOS will ask you to restart the app afterwards.
- Accessibility — recommended. Required for any policy rule that matches on browser-tab URLs (e.g. the Banking sensitive-app pack). If you skip it, those rules silently won't censor URLs.
- Microphone — only if your organisation's policy enables meeting capture. macOS opens the same Privacy & Security flow.
If you decline any of these now, you can grant them later from System Settings → Privacy & Security.
Windows install
- Run the downloaded
.exe/.msiinstaller. - Click through the standard installation prompts. The default install location is fine.
- After install, ScreenJournal launches automatically.
On first launch, Windows may show a SmartScreen prompt — click More info → Run anyway to confirm.
The tracker also asks for:
- Microphone access, only if your org's policy enables meeting capture.
Other permissions (screen capture, app-focus tracking) work out of the box on Windows.
Verifying the install
After install, look for the ScreenJournal icon:
- macOS — in the menu bar (top right, next to the clock).
- Windows — in the system tray (bottom right, near the clock; you may need to expand the overflow).
Click the icon to open the tracker window. You should see the sign-in screen.
If the icon isn't there:
- Check that the app is running (Activity Monitor on macOS, Task Manager on Windows).
- On Windows, try launching from the Start menu by typing "ScreenJournal".
- On macOS, try launching from Spotlight (
⌘-Space, type "ScreenJournal").
